THE LOCALE
What we offer as your hosts...
Having spent many years in the area and exploring all aspects of the surrounding area we have come to realise that our little gem of a city has everything we could ever want right on our doorstep. Amazing restaurants and restauranteurs, the best of local and regional Italian wines and local wineries, beautiful organic produce, the most scenic hills and walkways, fresh water rivers to swim in, cycling routes, and even private chefs. All of these local businesses are at hand to offer you the best experience possible. Should you wish to have a personal wine tasting, or a local chef prepare dinner for you, a reservation made in one of the many restaurants in the area, a local guide to take you to explore the hills we can make this happen for you. Arriving late let us know and we’ll make sure the fridge has some provisions.
We want you to fall in love with the city that keeps giving as much as we have.
Cafes... There are many little cafes along the outskirts of town. Stop by if passing for an espresso. The following are the ones I like to go to which are all within 2 minutes walk of the house.
Luchessi’s... in the new town. By far the most important café of Barga. All freshly baked in their bakery adjoining it this café is busy with locals and visitors. You order and pay and the friendly staff will give you a number to take to your table. But don’t be fooled by the array of baked goodies! These guys do really good aperitivo and quite often have evening with local musicians and set dinner menus.
Alpino...on the way from new town to old town on the corner in a perfect position to sit outside and people watch. Great coffee and a small array of café goodies which are really good. Predominantly a bar but has slushies and gelato for kids big and small!
Gelateria il Giardino is a lovely ice cream place along the same street as Alpino. Amazing flavours and very reasonable.
Bar Moscardini...a little café on the road that takes you from the new town to the old town. A lovely local run little café with friendly service. Great focaccia sandwiches and if you don’t like what’s made up they’ll make up whatever you want. Really good coffee too. They have a deli area where you can buy take away dinners for reheating. Or a full bar if you fancy something stronger...
Caffetteria la Volta...as you pass the red phone box the road takes you up a narrow street which is steep! Halfway up you’ll stumble upon this café which has a seating area under the tunnel. It’s a new café with a deli counter where they can make a sandwich for you. Again a bar too so nice to take a break from the steep climb to the duomo!
Expolore a little more...
Past Caffetteria la Volta and further on you’ll reach Piazza Salvi which is home to Da Aristo bar. As mentioned before a hub for meeting people from all walks of life. They have a great selection of cold meats and cheeses. Run by Lorenzo and Sharon. Great guys so make sure to say hi. I call this the honey pot as we always seem to get “stuck” here.
Also in this piazza is Café Capretz. A stunning setting for either winter or summer. The terrace is steeped in history and a vast indoor space but through this there is a terrace which holds 4 or 5 tables. There is a beautiful view from here and if you can manage a sunset it’s magical. A good varied menu with local fare aswell as tapas dishes with an Argentinian twist. Friendly staff and good for groups as menu is large to cater for everyone.
Further up from this piazza is the most amazing seafood restaurant. Giro di boa. His specials are determined on what he has gotten that morning. A family run restaurant with Ricardo in the kitchen and Stefano front of house. If you like seafood do not miss this one. Also caters for non seafood lovers too. Great wine selection too.
Back through the old town your next piazza is Angelio. This piazza not only houses various art galleries but L’Osteria trattoria. Always busy with a great atmosphere..run by husband and wife team Ricardo and Sally (you could be lucky to hear Sally sing some opera for you!) this restaurant has a great selection of traditional dishes, a vast wine list and specials added to the menu. Another good restaurant option for groups as the menu is quite big. I definitely recommend the steak cooked on a salt stone. You can finish it to your desired preference. It’s delicious! One feeds 2
As you make your way through the rest of the old town the next restaurant is Scaccaguai. A family run restaurant with Ricardo front of house alongside his brother Nicole and in the kitchen is sister Chiara. This is fine dining at its best with emphasis on truffle for the specials. A beautiful dining experience. Make sure to try the eggs with truffle starter! And always ask Ricardo for wine recommendations. He always has a hidden bottle that isn’t on the menu! This restaurant never fails. (50 metres from house)
Next on the way through is Wine not. Run by Giovanni this place is a great all rounder. Great cocktails, varied menu and extensive wine list. The quality of ingredients here are great. The cheese and meat platter with local honey never fails. Fantastic atmosphere and very friendly staff. Great for aperitivo, dinner or late drinks. Music is always great and quite often live music in the piazza too.
Our other favourites in and arond town...
Just before the exit of the old town is L’Altana. The most traditional restaurant in town in my opinion. Run by family mostly female this restaurant prides itself on homemade fare with local ingredients. If steak in balsamic gravy is on you must try it! Or their vegetable risotto! But to be fair everything is delicious.
If you fancy a take away just across from L’Altana is che pizza. A really good pizza and lovely guy who is always working hard. If he’s busy grab a cold beer from the fridge while you wait.
Through the arch is Pizza Indie. A bar, restaurant with a fantastic terrace. Definitely go to the top terrace to look at the view over the valley. Truly stunning. Has a decent pub menu...pizza, burgers etc. Nice array of drinks and beers. Opens late.
Pranzo is Italy’s name for lunch but more typically workman’s lunch. This is usually served from 12-2 and will include a pasta course, meat course with side dish, tea, coffee, water and wine. The normal price ranges from €13-€15 pp. It is always great quality local menus.
Within walking distance of the house is one of the best in the area. Fratelli Rossi. This restaurant is also just 5 min walk from our local pool so perfect to walk over for lunch while spending the day at the pool! Again family run with Alessio front of house you are immersed in local lunchtime atmosphere with fabulous food. The seating area is inside with a small deli, vegetable shop and supermarket! So you can grab your shopping and have lunch in one stop!
If you fancy a drive there are 2 others I would strongly recommend...Il Bugno, a 10 minute drive in the neighbouring town of Fornaci di Barga and La Bionda di Nonna Mary also in this town. Super flavours and bustling atmosphere.
What's in the next town...
Pizzeria Trovaposo....best pizza in the area. Flo is the owner and front of house. Always busy so booking recommended! You will not be disappointed. Fornaci di Barga. 10 min drive. Treat yourself to gelato in Theobroma. It’s also along the Main Street in this town.
Ristorante Pizzeria al Barchetto... lovely setting over looking a lake. Great seafood and huge varied menu including pizza. A good group restaurant. 15 min drive. Gallicano
Ristorante Il Flamingo...This restaurant also does Pranzo but at night it takes it to a different level with it’s a la carte menu. A lovely interior restaurant with good service. 20 min drive. Ponte All’ania.
Ristorante L’Arsenale Agriristoro... a real farm to fork experience in a gorgeous setting. This is definitely a long dinner experience. 10 min drive. Pietro In Campo.
Ristorante Vivi Verde Bistrot...a newly opened Bistrot 25 mins drive but so worth it! Has a lovely setting with changing menu cooked by the young chef alongside her partner who is front of house. You can book online. A real treat!
Podere Concori... a beautiful winery 10 min drive. This beautiful place offers delicious charcuterie boards with award winning bio dynamic wines. They offer wine tastings and cooking classes. Apericena is Friday to Sunday only. Book online.
La Cantina Del Vino...A wonderful local winery. Take the large wine bottles from the house and Francesca or Vanda will fill them for you with their wines of choice. Super experience with really decent montepulciano for €2.50/ €3 per litre. You can book wine tasting paired with charcuterie boards and they’ll also come to the house if you’d like to utilise the wine cellar for a personalised tasting! They also sell wines and oils by the bottle too. They can even ship products home for you.
This is just a snippet of some of my favourite places to go. There are so many to choose from and all a great experience. Feel free to share any recommendations.
Amenities in the local area
Pools, hills & Private Chefs!
We have 2 public pools. One is 15 min walk from the house, the other is a 10 min drive. The local one is spacious with plenty of sunbeds and an onsite café or walk across the road to Fratelli Rossi’s for Pranzo. The other is nestled within the mountain with an outstanding view over Barga. Definitely worth the drive. Needs to be pre booked through what’s app as it’s much smaller. Great value café onsite and very friendly staff. It’s in Albiano. Make a day of it and the local village restaurant opens at 7 where you could finish off your day with an evening meal there. It’s called La Terrazza.
Cold and refreshing river swimming is the best way to cool down. There is one just 20 minute walk from the house by ponte di Catangnana. However I recommend hopping in the car for 10 mins, packing a picnic (picnic cool bag in the house) and heading for the railway river. You park at a disused train station (Castelvecchio Pascoli) walk through the pathway that leads you to a pebble beach underneath the railway line. Or walk up and pitch your self on the verge where the cool breeze is very welcoming! Take a large rubber ring for the kids to slide down the natural weir. A great day out which is amongst locals! If you fancy walking back across the bridge there is a lovely restaurant that do a great Pranzo. Osteria al Ritrovo del Planteno. A 25-30 min drive takes you to the verni pools. Has a few different areas to experience the freezing cold water which is amazing on those hot summer days. Also has a few high jump off points for those dare devil kids! Make sure to pack those little wet water shoes. You can grab them in the local ABC store at a very reasonable price.
Hill walking is a must in this area. Make sure you head out early in the summer months but spring and autumn are perfect conditions to experience everything this area has to offer. The walk to Monte Forato is a firm favourite. Also known as the “lying down man” it is a 10k 840m elevation walk immersed in the spectacular nature and landscape of the garfagnana. The route starts in Fornovolasco which is about a 35 min drive from the house. The beginning is steep but it levels out. Very easy to navigate with coloured signs and ground conditions are good. Make sure you’ve packed your walking boots for this. I can’t explain how much this walk is worth doing. The views and sense of achievement at the top is unbelievable. There are many other smaller local walks including the Roman road from Barga to the hilltop village of Sommocolonia. We have recommendations for local guides and quite often use Stafano from Wild Trail Guides. He does a lovely walk in the Lucca hills which meanders through a small winery where he’ll organise a tasting and lunch! Cinque terre which is only 1 ½ hours drive has great trails too which are easily followed through hiking apps or follow the tourist route through the villages. There are far too many trails to mention but I guarantee there’s a walk to suit everyone.
If cycling is more your thing Il Ciocco bike circle is only a 10 min drive. Here you can rent mountain E-bikes on either a half day or full day basis. They have many trails including country, family, panoramic, exploring as well as endurance for those thrill seekers among you! This is a fantastic day out with all equipment available. At the bottom of this mountain is a lovely family restaurant and pizzeria if you want to finish your day off with dinner. Uncle Meo’s. Plenty of variety.
Zip lining, paddle boarding, canyoning, river swimming, paddle yoga all under one roof? Absolutely! Canyon park in Bagni di Lucca is a 40 min drive away. It has it all. Everything can be booked online with a time that suits you. Check out their website to pick the activity to suit you. We as a family go here on a yearly basis. I can’t recommend it enough. If you plan it right there is a really nice restaurant about 3k from the park which is our go to. Bar tipo Gigio. Always busy 1-2 so either pre book or go at 2! If your thinking you’d like a little more of an adrenaline rush then check out Adrenalima.it. It offers a white water rafting experience. They can offer a soft experience too! These places are great to do all of these activities without the commercial end of things that we quite often experience in larger cities or more touristy destinations. The simplicity of the set up is what makes it so special. The scenery is stunning and more important there is an activity to suit everyone in the group.
Private chef...This is an absolute must if you have a group. Francesco from Wild Food Lab will curate a menu to suit using locally sourced and foraged ingredients. Start your evening off with an aperitivo downstairs in the cool bar area where you be contacted by Francesco when appetisers are ready. Because of the lay out of the kitchen this experience is fantastic. He will explain his cooking method and ingredients used while being situated in the centre while serving you. Francesco can organise a wine pairing for you if desired or use the lovely local wine you’ve purchased from la Cantina del vino! It’s your choice on the amount of courses you want. This is a five star evening all within the comforts of your own house. Retire to the bar area for a night cap. Should you wish the bar to be stocked for your group feel free to contact us directly.
Should you wish to have fridge stocked or some light shopping arranged please feel free to ask. We can also organise some large portions of ragu or tomato sauces from local restauranteurs should you want to take an easy option for feeding little mouths!
Fancy going further afield for a day...
Lucca, Florence, Pisa, Viareggio & Cinque Terre...
Lucca...Bus leaves from Barga direct or train from Fornaci di Barga which is a 10 min drive. Or you can drive there in 40 minutes. There are many car parks just outside the walls which are very reasonable.
This walled city is simply wonderful. All the charm of an Italian city but small enough to explore in one day. Hire bikes and cycle around the walls, climb the many towers to see the view of the city,
walk through the narrow streets and pop into the beautiful cathedrals throughout. Lucca has some fantastic artists playing throughout the summer so keep an eye out on luccafest to see who’s playing.
There are many restaurants to choose from. One of my favourites but must be pre booked is Osteria da Pasqualino Gubitosa. Super food and an even better wine list. Make sure to ask for recommendations
but beware as his enthusiasm for wine can linger! Definitely sit in the anfiteatro to experience this wonderful piazza. For a more casual meal try sottosotto. For wine tasting or even just a nice glass
of wine with local cheeses and meats try Enoteca Vanni. Treat yourself to a nice bottle to take home. Next door there is a whiskey cellar if you fancy trying some. And for the best cocktails try Franklin 33.
Lucca is too close to you not to go! Bare in mind buses and trains normally finish up around 8 so unless your driving make sure to plan around this.
Florence...Again bus direct from Barga or train from Fornaci di Barga. You normally have to change train in Pisa but it’s normally only a 10 min wait. The train system in Italy is great and the app tells you
what platform you need etc. It is a very reasonable mode of transport and parking is very expensive in Florence. First word of advise, if Florence is on your list make sure to pre book any museums or galleries
you would like to visit. Don’t be disappointed as they book up well in advance and every single one is worth visiting. They are truly stunning. Find your sandwich shop and indulge in what Florence is famous for
and buy an aperol spritz from you little window in the wall! There are more than 150 of these throughout the city. If you want to experience one of these by a café try Babae Firenze south of the river. Don’t let
the queue put you off. It’s worth it. And you meet so many different people travelling around Italy with loads of tips! Florence is hot in the summer months and busy so consider a spring or autumn break to see it
more comfortably.
Pisa... direct bus from Barga or train from Fornaci di Barga. A very accessible city only a short walk from the train station. It has lots to offer in terms of shopping, restaurants, cafes etc and
of course the leaning tower. But Pisa has an astounding amount of churches and cathedrals to explore along with many palaces. It’s architecture is stunning. Or stroll through art museums and stumble
upon the vast piazzas.
Viareggio...direct bus or train. A day at the beach is a must. Only 1 hr 20 minute drive and easy parking. The shop and hotel lined promenade hides the amazing beach which is adorned with beach
restaurants, cafes and bars. Book a bed and umbrella at one of the many huts and take in the lovely breeze. The shallow water is perfect for younger kids and it is well supervised with lifeguards
at every section. Relax at the beachfront bars to enjoy an aperitivo watching the sun go down and finish your day with the freshest seafood listening to the waves.
Cinque Terre...recommend to drive as public transport can take 4 hours or more. Driving is 2 hours. There isn’t anything I can say about this area except go! It is breathtakingly beautiful with a
pathway that takes you through the 5 amazing villages or a train which can be boarded in the port town of La Spezia. Every visit here brings a different outlook. Explore at your leisure and make sure
to grab a gelato and hang your feet in the water. Explore any time of year.

THE STORY
Why Barga...
I could copy and paste from many descriptions about Barga because anyone that visits this wonderful town tend to describe it in the same way. Barga is a place that sucks you in and makes you feel relaxed.
Is it the tiny cobbled streets that we see the battered cinquecentos driving through, the fabulous duomo that overlooks the rooftops, the galleries that hang paintings oozing with talent from
accredited artists or the impromptu get together of local musicians in a tiny piazza outside the local bar of Aristos. Not only is it these but it’s the organised events that take place throughout
the year that see’s local and nearby visitors come together young and old to celebrate each event like it’s the only event of the year! Our chestnut festival, chocolate festival, opera festival, jazz festival,
summer piazette, fish and chip festival, street food festival, Scottish festival (Barga is the most Scottish town in Italy!) Beer festival. These are just a snippet of events and gatherings.
Ferragosto is another lovely spectacle seeing music being played throughout our streets bringing an abundance of atmosphere to every corner. Our local jazz club opens on Friday nights throughout the
winter hosting an array of talented musicians. A must for a winter night out! But in terms of getting a feeling about the town, I read an article many years ago and I promised myself whenever
I launched our enevitable rental house I would attach the link. It describes it perfectly. So I contacted the author who very happily agreed for me to share his link. .
So please read his article It may just explain the finer details!
“Barga punches above its weight” always resonates with me. It most definitely does!
